1. Dr Vidya Sagar (1956-1966)
- Saint Doctor of North India.
- Gave the concept of Family Therapy in India for the first time.
- He established Psychiatry unit in the General hospital, Amritsar.
- He served as Medical Superintendent of Government Mental Hospital, Amritsar during the period of 1952 to 1965.
- Government Mental Hospital was named as Vidya Sagar Institute of Mental Health Sciences after his selfless devotion in the mental health services of insane patients in that era.
- After leaving from Mental Hospital, Amritsar, he migrated to Rohtak (Haryana) and started working in PGI Rohtak over there.
2. Dr. J. S. Neki (1966-67)
- Retired as Director of PGIMER Chandigarh.
- Worked in the field of trans-cultural Psychiatry.
- Gave the concept of Guru-Chela Therapy relations
3. Dr. Gurmeet Singh (1967- 1971)
- First to start MD in GMC Amritsar Drug De-Addiction in Punjab state.
- Migrated to Patiala medical college and also served as the Principal and DRME (Punjab).
- He started the project of Acute Psychosis under ICMR
- Amritsar Depressive Inventory and PSLE (Presumptive Stressful Life Event Scale) were devised by him
- Emotional Distress Syndrome Scale was given by him
- Worked on grief reaction
4. Dr. Harish Verma (1972-1974)
- He worked in U.K
5. Dr. B. L. Goyal (1978-2000)
- He served for the longest period of 22 years as the Head of Department
- Contributed al lot in terms of academics, research and established a 10 bedded De-Addiction centre under DMHP program for district Muktsar was started by him.
- He retired as the Director of IMH, Amritsar in 2000 and is continuously providing his services to people of Punjab in terms of Mental Health and Drug De-Addiction
6. Dr. Paramjit Singh (2000-2010)
- Did a lot of hard work in streamlining the DMHP and was the sole person responsible for the practical implementation of DMHP in state of Punjab.
- He retired in 2010 and shifted to US and is doing active work there.
7. Dr. B. S. Sidhu (2010- 2011)
- He retired in 2010 and shifted to US and is doing active work there.
- He worked for a very short time span transferred to GMC Patiala and retired as HOD Patiala.
8. Dr. P. D. Garg (2011 -2019)
- Contributed particularly in the field of drug de-addiction.
- He was conferred National award for outstanding achievement by an individual for prevention of alcoholism and drug abuse on 26th June 2016 by our Honourable President of India.
- OST Centre of India was inaugurated on 4th October 2010 under his supervision
- Swami Vivekananda Drug Deaddiction and Treatment Centre was inaugurated on 2nd April 2011 and since then has been serving the state under his proficient chairmanship.
- A separate 50 bedded psychiatry ward building was inaugurated in June 2015
- First govt. aided Drug Rehabilitation Centre was inaugurated on 24th July 2015.
- Drug De-Addiction centre in Central Jail Amritsar is being looked after by the Department of Psychiatry.
- Of special mention, is the recent established record in The Guinness book of world records where 8724 school students participated in a mass drive saying "SAY NO TO DRUGS" in collaboration with district administration, SVNDDTC and Pankaj/Preeti Dance Academy.
- He was involved in conceiving the OOAT Program and giving it the actual shape by the Govt. of Punjab in which about 180 OAT centers were established.
9. Dr. Rajnish Raj (2018- 2019)
- He worked for a very short time span and is currently working as Professor and Head of Psychiatry Dept. GMC Patiala.
10. Dr. Neeru Bala ( 2019 to till date)
- She did her post graduation from Faridkot in year 2005 and is serving for Psychiatry and deaddiction services from last 14 years.
- Honoured in Central Jail Amritsar at the event of Independence Day for conferring deaddiction services to jail inmates on 15th August 2019.
- Got best paper award in Dr. Y.G. Bhojraj award competition,
- Have 10 national and international research publications by her name.
- Recently working on ICMR Project under Multi Disciplinary Research Unit.
- Participated in imparting OAT Trainings to medical and paramedical staff.
- Currently Professor and Head of Psychiatry Dept. GMC Amritsar, continuing her efficient services for the well being of psychiatric patients
