Going back to our memory lane, it was in 1956, when our glorious department of psychiatry began as a psychiatry unit in government medical college Amritsar. It was headed by Late Dr Vidya Sagar, who held the positions of professor and head of department and Medical Superintendent of government Mental Hospital, Amritsar.
In year 1967, our department achieved another milestone when, under the guidance of Dr. Gurmeet singh, Post Graduate Training (MD) was started. Dr. Rajinder Arora was the first to get post-graduate degree from this department. MD Psychiatry is recognized by MCI and is included in the first schedule of the MCI Act, 1956.
As the awareness regarding mental health and its treatment on the rise and patient load was increasing, it was highly desirable that a new building be re-constructed in GNDH complex fully dedicated to psychiatric patient in year 2000. By 2015, full psychiatric unit was functioning, catering to the needs of patients with multiple psychiatric disorders.
Currently, our department is well armoured and is headed by Dr Neeru Bala, Professor and head. It has separate psychiatry and de-addiction wings which are fully equiped and properly staffed. It caters to every need of psychiatric patient that includes formal counselling sessions, biofeedback and various other therapies.
Our mission is to understand the problem of a person coming to us for treatment/help, as a whole by applying the latest knowledge in the field of mind, brain and body to improve his or her symptoms, course, outcome and quality of life .
